The Humanities Institute celebrated its seventh year by announcing the formation of a new Community Council, which met for the first time in early 2008. Comprised of distinguished representatives of educational, cultural, social service, and community organizations in central Texas, the Community Council advises HI on new and continuing program initiatives and partnership opportunities.

Mr. William Beardall, Jr. is an attorney and the director of the Equal Justice Center, a non-profit, non-partisan employment justice and civil rights organization in Austin.
Ms. Suzanne Burke is the Director of Curriculum in the Round Rock Independent School District.
Ms. Cynthia Charles is Managing Librarian of the Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library.
Dr. Tommy Darwin is the Director of the Professional Development and Community Engagement Program at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Deborah Edward is an adjunct professor in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and a former director of Greenlights for Nonprofit Success, an organization that helps Central Texas nonprofits by providing consulting, resources, and management training.
Dr. Karen Engle is W.H. Francis, Jr. Professor at the UT School of Law, and the director of the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice.
Dr. Alan Fenton is the English department chair and holder of the Mamie Dell Barrow Chair in English at St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin.
Mr. James Furgeson, Social Studies Department Chair at McCallum High School in Austin, is an award-winning teacher of history.
Ms. Sylvia Gale is the Founding Director of the Free Minds Project and She is also P. A. G. E. Project Director for Imagining America, a national consortium of colleges and universities committed to public scholarship in the arts, humanities, and design.
Dr. Lyman Grant is a writer, editor, and the Dean of Arts & Sciences at Austin Community College.
Mr. Julian Huerta is the Director of Community Services for Foundation Communities, Austin's largest nonprofit provider of affordable housing and supportive services.
Mr. Kirk Lynn is a playwright and founding member of the Rude Mechanicals Theater Collective.
Mr. Thomas Moran is Assistant Director of the Austin Public Library and the coordinator of its Austin Reads program.
Dr. Katherine Oldmixon, an award-winning poet, is the Director of the Writing Program and Associate Professor of English at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin.
Ms. Judith Rhedin is Assistant Director of the Performing Arts Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
Ms. Gail Rice serves as the Community Advocacy Director for SafePlace, an Austin non-profit that provides a spectrum of services for victims and survivors of sexual and domestic abuse.
Dr. Melissa Smith is the medical director of Seton Community Health Centers.
